One Year Later

Today’s New York Times updates us on the savage death and dismemberment of Rashawn Brazell, which occurred almost a year ago. To date, no one has been caught or charged with his murder. His memory lives on through the efforts of others.
The death of this young man was a sad tragedy and one that I still try to wrap my brain around. I don't think I'll ever be able to understand how someone could do what they did to this young man. What angers me besides his death is the lack of media attention to this gruesom hate crime. Matthew Shepards death made national headlines and got years of media attention and a movie. Same with the FTM transgender Brandon Teena. The only reason I knew about Rashawn's death was becaause of my affliations with POCC in Brooklyn.
It seems that it's up to the Black Gay community in NYC to make justice for his murder to happen. I do think it's great that the NY Times covered it though, but sad that there are no leads on this case and that the larger public interest in it has diminished.
