BITS & PIECES
Just a couple of notes while I'm thinking about them...
An exciting project is taking place here in New York with national, if not world wide ramifications. And it's being done almost entirely by one person. The Black Gay and Lesbian Archive (BGLA) is a five year project to gather together materials documenting the history of the Black LGBT/SGL community. Books, articles, photographs, personal papers, audio and video tapes, and other artifacts are all being sought and collected, with the long range intent of housing them in research repositories so that future generations can study and better understand our community. Steven G. Fullwood is the one man army behind this project. So if you'd like to learn more, volunteer to help, or contribute something, contact him.
Saturday, October 11 is National Coming Out Day, a project initiated by the Human Rights Campaign. While the issue of when, how and to whom one comes out is very much a personal decision, I think there is value to being visible as openly LGBT people where ever we are, as regularly as possible, so that our enemies recognize that we are everywhere. I'll be sharing my rather ho-hum coming out stories here, and invite you to do the same.
Finally, Flirtingtime.com is a group that organizes speed dating events for Black singles, gay and straight. They're based in NYC, but hold functions all across the country in conjunction with local organizers. On Nov. 18, they will be holding another of their soirees just for us. I attended one they held back in June along with Black Pride NYC, and actually had a lot of fun, far more than I expected to have. It was enjoyably free of some of the game playing inherent in most nights out. (I didn't make a love connection, but that's another story.) Check it out for yourself.
